news and notes

March 24, 2006

update on jim’s injury: most likely, its an inflammation in the ulner nerve. he can play through it and he did in yesterday’s win 4-2 win against the dodgers. it did not look like it bothered him because he robbed old buddy, old pal j.d. “Ouch” drew of a homerun. he also went 2 for 4 with a double and a single.

juan mateo was sent back to the cubs. he had no chance anyway. first, he was a week late with probably made it a done deal that he was gone. after that, he can in and dunc said that he had not thrown before getting to s.t. because he did not have much location/command. he only pitched 4 innings in the grapefruit league(i think). so the cards offered him back and got 25k of the 50k they paid for him. there are too many guys competing for a couple of pen spots anyways.

Left fielder Larry Bigbie (injured foot), who has been working out but not playing, said he hopes to be back in the lineup today.

Even if Bigbie can go, the Cards won’t field their full complement of regulars today, as La Russa said some of them will get the day off.

Cards ace Chris Carpenter will make his first home start of the spring today at Roger Dean Stadium. His final two starts of the spring will be at home.

In the crowd at Holman Stadium was former U.S. women’s soccer national team member Mia Hamm, the wife of Dodger Nomar Garciaparra.

Cardinals shortstop David Eckstein has eight hits in his past 13 at-bats.
