Lunatic idea of the week: Rolen batting in the 2 hole

March 27, 2006

ok, here comes my crazy idea of the week.

ready, how about having rolen bat 2nd in front of the great pujols. i really dont think its a bad idea, at least for a while. encarnacion does not have the obp to be a number 2 hitter. rolen does though. here are his career numbers:

SEASON TEAM G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG

1997 Philadelphia Phillies 156 561 93 159 35 3 21 92 263 76 138 16 6 .377 .469 .283

2000 Philadelphia Phillies128 483 88 144 32 6 26 89 266 51 99 8 1 .370 .551 .298

2001 Philadelphia Phillies151 554 96 160 39 1 25 107 276 74 127 16 5 .378 .498 .289

2002 Philadelphia Phillies100 375 52 97 21 4 17 66 177 52 68 5 2 .358 .472 .259

2002 St. Louis Cardinals 55 205 37 57 8 4 14 44 115 20 34 3 2 .354 .561 .278

2003 St. Louis Cardinals 154 559 98 160 49 1 28 104 295 82 104 13 3 .382 .528 .286

2004 St. Louis Cardinals 142 500 109 157 32 4 34 124 299 72 92 4 3 .409 .598 .314

2005 St. Louis Cardinals 56 196 28 46 12 1 5 28 75 25 28 1 2 .323 .383 .235

Career Totals 1251 4585 805 1300 308 29 231 859 2359 625 972 92 35 .375 .515 .284

as you can see, rolen's obp throughout his career has been very good to great. in leach's article today, he says that the most important part of the 2nd hole in the lineup is to getting on base. encarnacion does not have a very good obp and spivey has been struggling.

i think rolen would be a really good 2nd hitter in the lineup. he would get a lot of fastballs to hit. this means he probably can get his power stroke back quicker. after that happens, he can move back to the cleanup of 5th spot in the lineup. this might only be a temporary fix, but it should last about a month or two. by then, we would have seen what spivey, encarnacion and bigbie (after he gets back from his injury) have done and assess the situation then.

i think that this is a pretty good idea. i dont like jim edmonds in the two hole because he does not seem very comfortable. throughout his career jimmy has hit best in the 4th and 5th spot in the lineup. so, here is the proposed lineup for opening day:

eckstien, rolen, pujols, edmonds, encarnacion, taguchi/j-rod, molina, spivey/miles, carpenter

what do you think? give me some feedback.
