Cards lock up Carp

December 5, 2006

Carp the hammer

as reported on the great blog, VEB (and later on the cards’ site), the cards have given chris carpenter a 5 year extension with an option for a sixth. so he is signed from now until the end of the 2011 season with an option for 2012.

i think the cardinals got a bargain by signing carpenter to this extension. wait an offseason or two and you will see that carp will not be getting paid much compared to what the other aces.

actually, dont look that far ahead; just follow what barry zito is going to get. word on the street is he will be getting around a 6 year deal worth 102 million dollars. that is 17 million dollars a year!

i dont know about you, but i would take carpenter over zito any day of the week. besides, zito has never been injured throughout his career, and he has pitched a lot of innings.

i think he is due for some kind of arm injury sometime soon. that is just my opinion.

by doing this, i think this allows the cards to make a big move.

either sign a big name pitcher (which now they can pay a lot of money for because carpenter is the scale) or pull of a blockbuster trade for a big name pitcher or at least a pitcher with great promise who has showed that “ace stuff”. i would prefer one that can blow people away but does not have to because he has at least 3 plus pitches.

thats my take on the carpenter situation. now its up to jocketty to go land the big fish!

it got zero talk, just like when the astros signed/extended roy oswalt’s contract. these two guys are the top two pitchers in the national league and no one seems to realize it.
