Cards add righty to rotation

January 4, 2008

the cardinals signed right handed starter matt clement to a one year deal with an option for a 2nd year.

the one year deal is worth 1.25 million dollars with plenty of incentives if he is able to achieve certain “marks” set for him the our great gm MO.

its a risk, but a relatively low risk. if he accumulates a .500 record at the end of the season with a 4.5ish era, i would be really happy with that and he would be the big signing of the offseason. if not, not biggy; he would just be the kip wells of 2008.

so, not a treat signing but a filler nonetheless. at least its not the 4 million that the cards will never get back that they spent on the kipster.

the rotation looks like this going into spring training:

whether the braintrust would admit it or not, this looks like a rebuilding year. no way in god’s green earth is this team going to compete to make the playoffs. unless, everyone outperforms their career norms and many other teams falter; i dont see all of these scenarios coming together to get the cards into the playoffs next season.

i think most cards fan can handle it; the organization should just come out and say that this is a rebuilding year and the team wont be very “competitive” next season. the cards have had a nice run over the last decade or so. almost every team has a couple of down years to reload and then get back into contention; unless you are the redsox or the yankees.

also, rumors are the cards are trying to resign aaron miles for infield depth.

what do i have to say about that? no, he will just take at bats and playing time away from brendan ryan and possibly a spot on the team for brian barden.

SIDENOTE: sorry for not posting in a while to both of my readers. I have another upper respiratory viral infection that has hit me pretty hard. i’ve been in bed recovering for the last two weeks. i’m better now but still healing. probably will be back into the full swing of things by the end of January when school returns. right after mlk day.
i hope you enjoyed the holiday season and have a great new year.
