Cards agree with Molina on a 4 year deal; Agree to one year deal with Ankiel

January 21, 2008

The cardinals have signed their catcher yadier molina to a 4 year deal. this deal includes a club option for 2012. if not for this deal, he would have been eligible for free agency after the 2010 season.

the deal is worth 15.5 million dollars over 4 years and the team option for 2012 is worth 7 million dollars.

I think this is a pretty good move by MO; to lock up yadi rather cheaply in this crazy market. I just hope he does not have a full no trade clause.

If Bryan anderson develops like he is projected to, then molina will become expendable and anderson can take over. he still needs a couple of years though; one at AAA and another as yadi’s backup in the bigs. so, molina can be a valuable trading chip if this occurs.

anderson is still very young, is a lot better hitter than yadi and he hits left handed. thats a pretty good combination. he just needs to keep hitting, develop defensively and keep learning.

if he does not pan out, then you got molina locked up. so, it makes sense.

I know I’m late on this also, but the cards agreed to a one year deal with Rick Ankiel. it is worth 900,000 thousand dollars with incentives that can accumulate to the deal being worth up to a million dollars.
