Spezio must go and Cards vs. Billikens

February 27, 2008

UPDATE: the cardinals did the right thing and cut scott spezio. I would not have been surprised if they had kept him on the roster however. they gave him his second chance and he blew it and thats the end of that. time to move on from this nonsense.

scott spezio has grabbed the headlines today instead of the cardinals first game of the spring against the saint louis university billikens.

scott was involved in an incident in Irvine, California. this occured a while back, december 30th 2007, but has just surfaced. six charges have been filed against spezio. now, he has a warrant issued for his arrest.

all the details are in the link above and the situation is not pretty.

my take is that the cardinals should cut this guy as soon as possible. sure everybody deserves a second chance, but this is ridiculous. he already had his “second chance” last season when he admitted that he was addicted to drugs and went to rehab. he supposedly cleared that up.

I’m beginning to think that the situation what not cleared, and not only is he into drugs but alcohol too since he was charged with a dui. this guy needs to go, but tlr thinks otherwise.

La Russa, who said he hadn’t talked to Spiezio since learning of the arrest warrant, said news of the allegation wasn’t a complete surprise. “I had heard there was an incident in California, but I didn’t think anything would come of it,” La Russa said.

really tony? nothing would come of it? he has a 10,000 dollar warrant issued for his arrest and he is facing several felonies and possible 2
years in prison. hey, what do I know? he is the lawyer right.

this is the same man who said brendan ryan was not “mature enough” and that he is “rough around the edges” and not ready for the big leagues yet. so, spezio is the mature one right? he is setting a helluva an example for the kids coming up.

look, this team is not going anywhere this season, so bill dewitt needs to show that he does not tolerate acts like this and cut this guy
loose. he is a changeable part anyway. if it is left to tony and Mo, they will keep this cancer on the team.

now, let’s get to the things that were supposed to make headlines today. the game against the billikens. the cardinals won this game easily thanks to a 10 run 4th inning.

mr. leach mentions that the already legendary amaury marti hit a pinch hit grand slam in the 4th and brian barton who homered, singled and walked. rasmus got on base and scored a run in all of his at bats. the game was called in the 7th inning.

I guess it’s easy to say that spezio should go. If you want to talk about setting an example, what about La Russa? Gee, wasn’t he arrested During spring training last year. I think Spezio was dead wrong and should have been cut, but what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.
Get rid of LaRussa too! Oh wait, they can’t get rid of him because they let him talk them into getting rid of Edmonds and Rolen! Well what MLB team needs golden glove defense anyway? Morons!!!!!

To be fair to LaRussa, the whole organization was apparently mislead on how serious this whole thing was. That’s why he said he didn’t think anything would come of it.

I think the biggest things were that it was Spiezio reneging on a second chance and the fact that he wasn’t totally honest with the organization.

well, you can’t kick tony off of the team because that was a one time thing. I don’t remember him ever getting in trouble before. so, I give him a 2nd chance. speezer already got his 2nd chance last season and he blew it.
