Sink or Swim

August 25, 2008

here comes the two games that will probably determine whether the cardinals make the playoffs as the wildcard team or stay home and watch the brewers playing in the playoffs for the first time since 1982.

the cards go into the game 3.5 games behind the beermen and 3-2 on the homestand. what next? a very important two games that they almost have to take both games to have a chance at the wild card. if they split, then it’s a long shot. worst case scenario, the brewers win both games and the cards basically are out of it and can only play spoiler to ther teams directly or indirectly. I don’t need to remind you, but these two games are the last head to head matchups against the brew crew.

positives going into to series:

– this on usually is always left off because pujols is always good. not today; the man is on fire! during the last three game series, albert went 8 for 10 with 4 walks, 3 doubles, 2 homers and 8 rbis.

-waino is back! 6 innings pitched, 4 k’s, 1 ER and 1bb…pretty damn good for someone that had been on the dl for over a month. those are the numbers, but his stuff looked sharp and everything had that old “snap” back and I’m referring to the curveball here; it was a “beltran-esque” yellow hammer. did I mention he will be starting wednesday night?

– I know it’s a sad time for cardinals fans, but having him on the dl instead of the bullpen might just save the cardinals a game or two (I’m talking about izzy here). I thank him for all that he has done for the cardinals but his time in a cardinal uniform is likely over.

– the cards get to avoid the beast that is sabathia. they gotta face sheets though. that’s alright, they have hit him pretty well over the years.

to the pitching matchups!

Tuesday night: ben sheets vs. todd wellemeyer

Wednesday night: manny parra vs. adam wainwright

enjoy the series, hopefully the cardinals go 2-0 and I will be in a nice and cheerful mood wednesday night (that’s when I’m probably going to post something new up).
